Ethical, Green and Organic Bargains September 21 2009

I hope you are enjoying the Indian Summer we seem to be having right now. My bees are making the most of it, foraging on Himalayan balsam and ivy and stocking up for winter.

1. One of the best ways to save both energy and money is to ensure that our household appliances are as efficient as they can be. Old refrigerators, cookers and washing machines can be real energy-hogs and end up costing much more to run that the latest models. And now Marks & Spencer Appliances helps out by taking your old machine for recycling when they deliver a new one - a practice we will see much more over the next few years. Their prices are good, too.

2. As the nights get longer and cooler, you are probably thinking of warmer bedding (well, you are now!) and this could be a good time to check out So Organic Ltd where I have just noticed they have 20% off bedding and duvets at the moment.

3. Shoes. Irresistible. Terraplana say: "...we try hard to use a variety of eco-friendly materials and innovative minimal glue constructions. Shoes that are good for you, shoes made from recycled materials, the minimum shoe. The totally sustainable shoe is still a long way off but with each collection we get that little bit closer." Nice shoes, too.

4. Do you like having books read to you? I do. And you might be surprised at how many titles are available as audio books these days - take a look at Listen2Online to find out why books don't always have to be printed.

5. And back to the 'saving money on energy' theme - you might want to take a look at Save On Your Bills for some really good energy-saving tips and the possibility that you could make bigger savings by switching supplier. Their service is service is free, fast, completely impartial and accredited by Consumer Focus.

And finally - as I mentioned bees - there is a new charity to protect the interests of bees and to fund research into bee conservation and more natural beekeeping methods. If you would like to help, either by making a small donation or by spreading the word, take a look at Friends of the Bees for lots of free information about bees and natural beekeeping.

Ethical, Green and Organic Bargains August 18 2009

I know - it's only a week since my last EGO-bulletin - but here are some great new links I think you will like:

1. Is your old computer getting past it? Rather than spending out on brand new machine, have you considered a refurbished model - with a 12 month warranty? Have a look here.

2. If you have not yet bought anything from Green People, now is a good time to do it as you can get free postage on your first order. They have probably the widest range of organic skin and body care products you will find, and helpfully provide a list of ingredients they do not use.

3. High fashion, ethical footwear? You know you want to look at the Terraplana site. They make a variety of sustainable products - including shoes. Actually, mostly shoes. You may not want to go barefoot ever again.

4. Triodos Bank is the most actively ethical bank in the UK, enabling people’s money to work for positive Social, Environmental, and Cultural change. Established nearly 30 years ago, Triodos Bank not only lets customers know where they don’t invest eg corrupt regimes and the arms trade but is also completely open and transparent about all the organisations it does lend to. Their Online Saver can be opened for as little as £1, and if you start one with £100, you get a free ‘Go Slow England’ book from leading environmental publishers Alastair Sawday worth £20.

5. Get on your bike with Evans Cycles and take advantage of their massive online sale - with free delivery and a no-hassle returns policy - road bikes, mountain bikes, electric bikes, folding bikes... you really can't miss this one.

Ethical Bargains August 2009

Summer started well and then turned wet in many places, putting a damper on holidays and on tourist-based businesses - among them some fine organic establishments that we hope will come through this recession relatively unscathed. As I have said before - we need to support businesses that are trying hard to do the right thing: after all, we want them to still be there when times are better.

1. Let's start with some voucher codes for Gossypium - Ethical Clothing:
a. spend in between £50 and £99 and get a £5 discount using this code: AW05
b. spend in between £100 and £ 149 and get a £ 10 discount using: AW10
c. Spend over £150 and get a £ 15 discount using AW15

2. So Organic Ltd have a summer sale on right now, with up top 30% off - and they have some great freebies too! They also now stock the entire Hauschka range, which is available online.

3. Triodos Bank is not one of the big, High Street banks that everyone knows - but because of their ethical standards, they didn't suffer the same traumas last year: when their competitors fell apart, Triodos stayed strong and continues to offer the same secure returns as it always has. If you are looking for a safe and ethical place to invest your savings, you might want to take a look at Triodos Bank

4. People Tree always have some really nice stuff in stock, and their FairTrade range is especially good value. Free delivery on orders over £50 until August 28th.

5. For rough and tough outdoor types who like genuine army surplus gear, take a look at the Mean and Green site and get free UK postage on any order using this code: BONDMAG

6. Sometimes it is really useful to have a credit card - like when shopping online, or travelling - but you want to be sure that you can't spend more than a certain amount. Or you want to give a growing-up child some spending money, but you don't want them carrying a lot of cash around. For these kinds of situation, the BREAD Card is ideal - it's a card you can pay into, and only spend what is in the account. It's a great idea, and really easy to get - no credit checks.

7. Did you know that you could actually save money by going green? This site tells you how! They say - No matter what life style you have today, everything you need to know about saving money and helping the planet is all in this book

Monday 20 April 2009

EGO Bargains April 20 2009

In most of Britain the spring has been glorious, for once, and I think this has contributed to a more general optimism than was apparent only a couple of months ago. It may be too soon to suggest that we are on the road to recovery, but at least the patient has survived the winter. Many organic and ethical companies are struggling, as people look for bargains and set aside their principles - but we need to support those businesses that are trying hard to do the right thing: after all, we want them to still be there when times are better.

1. Greenfibres has a new catalogue out, with some great products - they are one of the older organic clothing suppliers and pride themselves on exceptional customer service. Take a look at their new range - and remember to check out the sales bargains.

3. Did you know that you could actually save money by going green? This site tells you how! They say - No matter what life style you have today, everything you need to know about saving money and helping the planet is all in this book

4. Growing your own food was always a good idea, and now it is becoming essential for many people as a way of stretching the budget as well as providing fresher, greener and tastier veg for your table. Evengreener have a great range of compost bins, boxes and kitchen caddies to make the whole process of making your own fertilizer less smelly and more natural.

5. 'Sustainable shoes' is not a phrase you hear often, so check out Terraplana's amazing range of footwear - including the incredibly comfortable 'barefoot' range. Your feet will be pleased you did!

6. Have you ever thought of keeping bees? Have a free read of this article by 'Barefoot Beekeeper' Phil Chandler and see how easy it can bee!

EGO Bargains Feb 6 2009

January has closed on a chilly note, the recession is biting and we are all looking for ways to maintain a green lifestyle while staying afloat. And how we spend our money is important: we all want green and ethical businesses to come thorough the hard times, and they need us now more than ever. Many small businesses are struggling, so let's support them when we can - especially when they have great bargains on offer!

1. Of course we had to have a Valentine's Day offer, and we found some nice ideas right here at Love Eco.

2. You'll find vibrant and colourful things for your children at Babi Pur and everything is from fair trade producers or made locally in Wales. And guess what - they have a sale on right now! Shop with confidence for your baby or toddler, everything is ethically sourced and of the highest quality. We stock organic cotton baby clothes, Fairtrade certified cotton baby clothes, bamboo baby clothing, natural skincare and fair trade toys and clothes so you can keep your baby green and stylish.

3. If you are still in need of adult's or children's warm outer clothing this winter, Seasalt are selling a late delivery of jackets and waterproofs at cut prices - take a look here.

4. Peruvian Connection weaves fashion, art and culture into luxurious clothing and accessories. Every garment and piece of jewellery is completely original. Women's clothing up to 33% off. and men's up to 50% off and a clearance sale with up to 80% off!

5. The Go Green Company have some great power-saving gadgets - but what really caught my eye there was a big reduction of real sheep's wool duvets - just right for February nights.

6. Here's a very interesting concept for connecting borrowers and lenders that actually sidesteps the credit crunch and the banks! Zopa is a lending and borrowing exchange, offering loans of £1000 to £15000 for up to 5 years. They are also one of the only loan providers allowing borrowers to repay their loan early with no penalty or sneaky fees, so it's a really flexible loan. And, by the way, Zopa lenders also offer loans at some of the lowest rates in the market. Unlike the high street banks, they have no shortage of funds, so there's no credit crunch here!

Ethical, Green and Organic?

Growing awareness of the way our food is grown and our clothes are produced means that more people than ever recognize the importance of applying ethical criteria to the contents of their shopping basket.

'Ethical shopping' simply means buying products that guarantee that they are grown and/or manufactured according to recognized ethical standards, which may cover issues such as worker welfare, minimum wages and working conditions, and in some cases, the chemicals that may be used in the cultivation of raw materials and treatment of the end product.

Our intention is to give you access to a range of products that are regarded as having been ethically sourced - which often means they are certified organic and almost inevitably 'green'.

See 'latest offers' for up-to-date links to E.G.O. bargains.

Because not everyone will wish to apply the same standards of ethics, we advise you to research products yourself and ask relevant questions of the manufacturers and distributors.

To receive early notice of ethical, green and organic special offers, join the free E.G.O. list. We will only send you an email when we have something special to tell you - no spam - and you can leave at any time with a single click.
